What Is the DAD Standard?
At some point, “well trained” stops being a satisfying answer.
What happens next?
You've built your DAD Doberman. Now you maintain the training. Keep the skills sharp. Protect what you worked so hard to develop.
And for most K9 owners, that’s where the road ends.
But what if it didn’t?
What if everything you worked to build could take you somewhere?
More importantly, what if reaching that point meant you were ready for something bigger?
The DAD Standard is Tackleberry’s earned benchmark for developing and demonstrating what you and your K9 can accomplish through DAD: Deter. Alert. Delay.—Tackleberry’s 3 Pillars of Protection.

Have we met?

Hello, I'm Amy Arthur, founder of the Tackleberry Alliance.
My work within the K9 world is built around a simple belief: exceptional dogs deserve equally capable people beside them. Through education, development, and meaningful standards of achievement, I create practical frameworks that help you better understand the dog you're working with and discover what you're capable of accomplishing together.
Through my breeding program, the Tackleberry Alliance, and the Tackleberry Academy, you'll find the guidance, resources, and opportunities to take that partnership farther.
You bring the ambition. I'll help you build the path forward.
What Happens After “Well Trained”?
Reaching the level you set out to achieve is rewarding.
Staying there is important.
However, maintaining what you've already built isn't the same as having somewhere new to take it.
You can make the obedience cleaner. Strengthen the skills. Add another exercise. Find another training goal.
But eventually, more training can start to feel like different versions of the same destination.
After all, you haven't run out of things to teach your K9.
Instead, you've run out of places for everything you've built to take you.
And that's a very different problem.
Because capability becomes far more interesting when you can put it to use.
A Higher Level of Achievement
When it qualifies you to take on something greater.
When what you've earned gives you access to challenges you couldn't pursue before, opportunities to participate at a higher level, and eventually, the ability to contribute to something beyond your own success.
That’s when achievement begins to carry forward.
In other words, the work you put into your K9 doesn’t have to end with maintaining an exceptional dog.
Instead, what you develop can qualify you for what comes next.
The DAD Standard creates a way to demonstrate—and then build upon—what you’ve earned.
And as a result, the farther you choose to take it, the more significant what comes next can become.

What is the DAD Standard? Recognition Is Only the Beginning
Reaching a goal is rewarding.
Building on what you earned is different.
That’s why DAD Standard Recognition begins to have value beyond the moment you receive it.
But recognition alone isn't the point.
What you've earned can become useful.
For example, greater achievement can create access to greater challenges, new opportunities, and deeper participation within the Tackleberry Alliance.
As you continue to advance, opportunity can grow with you. At higher levels, participation can become contribution. Likewise, greater capability can bring greater responsibility. And what began as something you pursued with your own K9 can eventually give you opportunities to have an impact beyond your own achievement.
Ultimately, you aren't simply collecting recognition for where you've been. You're earning possibilities for where you can go next.
How far can that go?
That's something worth earning your way toward to find out.

What Can Access Open?
The farther you go, the more the landscape can change.
New challenges become available. New roles become possible. And over time, the experience you've earned can begin to carry weight in places where simply showing up isn't enough.
Access puts more within your reach.
In turn, it can bring you closer to people, opportunities, and experiences that allow you to do more with the capabilities you've worked to develop.
And at higher levels, access can become something even more valuable:
A seat closer to where things happen.
From there, you may have the opportunity to participate more deeply. To bring your perspective into the conversation. To take on greater responsibility—and have greater influence because you've earned the experience to support it.
That's an important distinction.
After all, the goal isn't to collect privileges for their own sake. It's to reach a point where what you've built gives you more options, more opportunity, and more ability to make something happen.
And sometimes, those doors only become visible once you've earned your way close enough to see them.

What Does the DAD Standard Represent?
A standard isn't only something you reach.
It's something you stand for.
The DAD Standard is built around a deliberate approach to K9 protection: defining the K9's role in protection, developing that role intentionally, and teaching the handler and K9 to work together when it counts.
Within that partnership, your DAD brings real advantages.
His presence can deter. His awareness can alert you to something you haven't noticed. And when a situation develops, his actions can help create one of the most valuable advantages you can have:
Time.
Time to recognize what's happening. Time to respond.
That's the structure behind DAD: Deter. Alert. Delay.—Tackleberry's 3 Pillars of Protection.
The DAD Standard doesn't diminish the K9's role in protection.
It defines it.
More Clarity: What is the DAD Standard?
Instead of placing the entire burden of protection on the dog—or reducing him to little more than a visual deterrent—the DAD Standard develops a working partnership in which the K9's natural and trained capabilities have purpose.
He observes things you may miss. He communicates information you can learn to recognize. Likewise, his presence changes the environment around you. And what he brings to the partnership can give you options you wouldn't have without him.
In turn, your responsibility is to learn how to work with those advantages.
That requires communication, awareness, control, and an understanding of the K9 beside you—because the value isn't found in what either of you can do alone.
Instead, it's found in what becomes possible when you know how to work together.
Ultimately, that's what it means to develop under the DAD Standard.
And when you pursue DAD Standard Recognition, you're working toward more than proof that your K9 is well trained.
You're developing the kind of K9-handler partnership the DAD Standard was created to represent.

What Does It Take to Earn DAD Standard Recognition?
DAD Standard Recognition begins with participation in The Tackleberry Academy.
That's intentional.
The DAD Standard represents more than a collection of skills you and your K9 can demonstrate. Instead, it represents an understanding of the principles behind those skills and the responsibility that comes with putting them into practice.
The Tackleberry Academy gives you the pathway to develop both.
However, that doesn't mean you have to do every piece of training alone.
You can work with a professional trainer. Seek additional expertise. Build advanced skills with people who can take you farther than you could go on your own.
But ultimately, someone else can't earn the Standard for you.
At some point, what your K9 has learned has to become something you know how to work with.
You need to understand the K9 beside you. Likewise, he needs to understand you. The communication, awareness, control, and decision-making have to belong to the partnership—not simply exist because a trainer put them there.
That's why DAD Standard Recognition isn't open recognition for any well-trained K9.
Instead, it's something you pursue through the DAD pathway and earn through what you and your K9 become capable of together.
You can bring expertise into that journey.
Ultimately, you still have to make the capability your own.

How Far Will You Take It?
There will always be value in having a well-trained K9.
But now, you know that doesn't have to be where the road ends.
What you've developed can become something you build upon. What you demonstrate can become something you earn. In turn, what you earn can open opportunities to go farther, participate more deeply, and eventually have an impact beyond what you first set out to accomplish.
How far you take it is up to you.
For some, developing a capable DAD may be exactly the destination they want.
For others, it may reveal just how much farther they're capable of going.
That's part of what makes an earned Standard interesting: reaching it doesn't have to close the door behind you.
Instead, it can show you the next one.
The DAD pathway through The Tackleberry Academy gives you somewhere to begin—and DAD Standard Recognition gives you something meaningful to earn along the way.
So, what comes after that?
You'll have to earn your way far enough to find out.
